Meghri Project

Started 2004

Revival of Meghri Poqr Tagh

Since 2004 the Izmirlian foundation was present in the most southern spot of Armenia, the historical town of Meghri, once positioned on the Great Silk Road.

The first initiative of the foundation during the period of 2004-2008 was the implementation of the community development project in Meghri aimed at the restoration and use of the cultural heritage of the town and the revival of its economic activity. Within the framework of the project a house in Meghri’s historic Poqr Tagh (the Lesser District), dating back to the 18th century, has been constructed and transformed into a guest house, with a traditional crafts development project implemented for empowering local women to reveal secrets of the national embroidery and carpet weaving.

In 2016, the Izmirlian Foundation has decided to scale up the previous project in cooperation with other donor organizations present in Armenia to tackle the social and economic problems in Meghri through the revival of the cultural heritage of the town and making it an attractive spot for the tourists. The programme aims to foster ethno-cultural hospitality approach by reviviing the unique buildings of folk architecture of the 19th century and early 20th century and turning the area into an international centre of ethnic hospitality.
