Restoration of Meghri Pokr Tagh

Ongoing
Revival of Meghri Poqr Tagh

Summary

Since 2004, the Izmirlian Foundation has supported the revival of Meghri’s historic Poqr Tagh (Lesser District) through an integrated approach combining cultural heritage preservation, community development and tourism. The initiative began with the restoration of a 19th-century traditional house, which was transformed into a guesthouse, alongside activities supporting local women in reviving traditional southern Armenian embroidery and carpet weaving.

Building on these efforts, the project aims to revitalize Meghri’s unique architectural and cultural heritage and develop Poqr Tagh as a vibrant center of ethno-cultural hospitality, contributing to the preservation of local traditions while creating opportunities for community and tourism development.

The project aims to preserve and revitalize the unique architectural and cultural heritage of Meghri’s historic Poqr Tagh by restoring traditional buildings dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries and giving them new functions linked to tourism and community life. It also seeks to promote ethno-cultural hospitality, revive traditional local crafts and create opportunities for the participation and economic empowerment of local residents, particularly women, while strengthening Meghri’s potential as a distinctive cultural tourism destination
